About this team
The Marketplace Manager, Japan will define and lead the multi-year strategy for our digital marketplace business in Japan, with Rakuten as the initial platform. This role owns the marketplace P&L, drives commercial and operational excellence, and represents the company with marketplace partners.
In addition to leading Rakuten, the Marketplace Manager will collaborate with Regional and Japan leadership to shape the future marketplace roadmap (Amazon JP, Yahoo! Shopping, ZOZOTOWN, etc.), ensuring that Japan’s marketplace business becomes a scalable growth engine and a strong representation of our brand.
A day in the life
Platform Ownership:
- Own the multi-year strategy and full P&L for marketplace, delivering on sales, profit, and return targets
- Act as the primary relationship manager with Rakuten account teams and other future partners, leading negotiations, promotions, co-op, and partnership opportunities.
- Develop annual and seasonal business plans including assortment strategy, promotional calendars, and sales forecasts.
- Lead daily trading activities (pricing, promotions, content updates) to maximize visibility, conversion, and profitability.
- Define and manage digital marketing investments and retail media spend to deliver traffic and conversion targets.
Content & Operations:
- Oversee end-to-end content and listing processes (new product launches, campaign updates, PDP optimization) with strong brand storytelling.
- Ensure operational excellence (stock availability, order processing, returns) in collaboration with supply chain and customer service teams.
- Guarantee compliance with brand guidelines and marketplace standards while maintaining premium brand positioning.
Strategic Input & Roadmap Development:
- Partner with Regional Marketplace Team and Japan business leaders to identify, evaluate, and prioritize future marketplace opportunities (e.g., Amazon JP, Yahoo! Shopping, ZOZOTOWN).
- As the business scales, build and develop a high-performing marketplace team to manage additional platforms and day-to-day operations.
- Provide data-driven market and consumer insights to inform marketplace roadmap, category strategy, and long-term planning.
- Contribute to cross-market best practice sharing across APAC and represent Japan marketplace needs at regional forums
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with Japan brand, merchandising, and digital marketing teams to align marketplace activities with country-level objectives.
- Act as the primary connector between Japan and Regional Marketplace teams, ensuring strategies are consistent with global and regional standards while tailored to local market needs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in eCommerce, online marketplaces, or digital retail in Japan, preferably in sportswear, fashion, or consumer goods. Brand.com experience is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of Rakuten ecosystem (merchant center, Super Deal, Rakuten Ads, loyalty/points integration).
- Proven ability to manage P&L and deliver sales.
- Hands-on experience in content management, promotional planning, and marketplace operations.
- Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills with external partners.
- Strong analytical capability and data-driven decision-making.
- Fluent in Japanese and business-level English.
- Operates as an entrepreneurial business owner, accountable for Rakuten performance.
- Balances hands-on execution with strategic input into Japan’s marketplace roadmap.
- Builds credibility with both Local and Regional teams through strong insights, data, and collaboration.
- Passionate about eCommerce and understands Japanese consumer behaviours in fashion/sports categories.
