The Footwear Product Development team is a diverse group of motivated, creative, and solution-oriented critical thinkers. They are product experts with deep industry knowledge of the footwear creation process, working cross functionally with design, sourcing, product testing, product management, and merchandising. This teams serves as an integral part of bringing lululemon footwear “to life,” transforming product designs from concept through commercialization using their technical acumen, problem solving and project management skills, and collaborative spirits. Ultimately, this unique set of skills ensures the delivery of premium, performance-led product to our guest.

 

a day in the life: what you’ll do

As a Junior Materials Developer within the Footwear team, you will play a crucial role in the development, organization, and management of premium materials for lululemon footwear. Collaborating closely with cross-functional product creation teams, you will be responsible for researching, selecting, and evaluating materials to ensure they meet the design and performance specifications for footwear models, while also owning the upkeep and organization of the Materials Library. Your experience in footwear creation and project management, as well as your organizational prowess and operational proficiency will contribute to the success of the team and product.

 

  • As part of the product creation process, you will select, evaluate, and develop footwear materials based on performance, quality, sourcing, sustainability, and cost considerations, while upholding the design intent and product brief requirements.
  • Manage the upkeep and organization of the Footwear Materials Library, ensuring the space is welcoming and functional as part of the material development process.
  • Build and maintain digital material assets: palettes, catalogues/tools, material specification data, test reports, and material records within the product lifecycle management system.
  • Cultivate strong business relationships with material suppliers: tracking samples, ordering library resources, reviewing new offerings, and providing feedback on collections and materials in development.
  • Study emerging material technologies and vendor capabilities, sharing findings with cross-functional product creation partners. 
  • Analyze test results to ensure materials meet performance standards, identify quality risks, and collaborate with the supplier to re-engineer failing material specifications.

 

qualifications

  • 2-5 years of relevant work experience, including library management, Footwear Materials Development, Materials Design, or Product Development experience, with a working knowledge of the performance and lifestyle footwear industry.
  • Proficiency in Smartsheet, MS Office (Excel), and Adobe Design Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Substance).
  • Experience using FlexPLM or similar product lifecycle management software is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of footwear component terminology.
  • Proficient knowledge of footwear material types, constructions, and manufacturing techniques: trims, synthetic leathers, films, textiles, yarns, fibers, dyeing, finishing, and printing, etc. 
  • Familiarity with Raw Material and Footwear testing methodologies and standards. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and follow-through on assigned responsibilities.
  • A highly motivated, self-starting individual with strong attention to detail, who thrives working independently with little oversight, as well as on a cross-functional team.
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills with global teammates.
  • Ability to travel domestically and/or internationally 5% of the time.

compensation and benefits package  

lululemon’s compensation offerings are grounded in a pay-for-performance philosophy that recognizes exceptional individual and team performance. The typical hiring range for this position is from $69,100 – $90,700 USD annually; the base pay offered is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity. As part of our total rewards offering, permanent employees in this position may be eligible for our competitive annual bonus program and equity offerings, subject to program eligibility requirements.

workplace arrangement

In-person collaboration and/or office-based work is necessary or important for the role. Work is mainly performed onsite, minimum 4 days per week.
